1910 Line Drives at the Pittsburg Pirates Including Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke.

Lot 119. 1910 Line Drives at the Pittsburg Pirates Including Honus Wagner and Fred Clarke. Published by The Pittsburg Press, this soft-cover yearbook, one of the earliest, commemorates the 1909 Pirates’ World Series Championship over Ty Cobb and the Tigers and introduces the 1910 season and players. There are 22 full-page spoofs or caricatures by “Rigby,” including Wagner, Clarke, Babe Adams and others. In each case, a headshot photo of the player is superimposed on a cartoon body with commentary. Wagner is referred to as the “King,” and the cartoon shows him on a throne. Early photos of “Forbes Field – World’s Greatest Baseball Park” and “After the Game, The Pittsburg Hippodrome, On Forbes Field, Opening May 30” punctuate these pages. Ex+ with very minimal soiling. The middle four pages have come undone from their staples, which produced minor rust on the pages. The only modifications to this yearbook add wonderful character. Pasted inside the front cover is a full-page newspaper clipping headshot of Fred Clarke, and inside the rear cover is an 8-4 win over Boston box score from a newspaper. It carries the notation: “Clarke’s Last Game, Sept. 23, 1915, Was There” in pencil. This is the best copy we have seen of this relatively scarce publication. Current Bid $330.
