Lot 263. 1888s Chromolithographed A5 Allen & Ginter City Flags Album. Victorian cherubs parade down capitol steps with the flags of major cities on the cover of this colorful, finely detailed album. Including the cover, there are 10 pages of chromolithography, a new and expensive printing technique introduced during this period. There also is a back cover. The album measures 7 ½” x 8 ½” and is bound with the original cord at the left. The cover is f-g with an edge chip at the top left and an edge tear, and the inside pages, vg-ex. The album features the 50 city flags of various countries that are in the N6 set. The non-sport albums from this period are every bit as attractive as the sports albums – and far more affordable!

Lot 264. 1889 A7 Allen & Ginter Fish from American Waters Album. In 10 inside pages, this beautiful example of chromolithography presents all 50 images of the fish in the N8 card set. It is the artwork surrounding the fish, however, that makes this album worth a premium bid. Fabulous Victorian artwork depicts men fishing, as well as boats and ships. The front cover is g-vg, and the back cover g with a corner chip and a couple of small areas of paper loss. The original string remains. Five of the inside pages are ex to ex-m, and five are vg-ex. The album measures 6” x 9 ¼”. The front cover shows a brook trout following a lure.

These cards constitute almost half of the set. “Little Cigars” were a popular diversion “between the acts” at stage productions, and it’s for this reason that the thespian cards are especially relevant. Lot 268. 5 Mutt & Jeff Pins, 3 Featuring Bud Fisher Art. Begun in 1907 by Fisher, Mutt and Jeff is often credited with pioneering the daily comic strip. It was the first successful continuous daily strip. Four of the pins are without pin-backs. Three of the five, all circa 1910s, have Fisher artwork: Nothing to Do ‘Till Tomorrow, pin-back present, foxing around the rim, otherwise ex; I’m the Guy and Cut That Stuff, Tokio paper back, both ex-m+. Lot 270. T70 American Tobacco Historical Events Set of 25. One of the most attractive non-sport issues ever produced, this set depicts famous events from American history. All of these cards are the larger variety. With the exception of the tri-fold card and two others, which have Hoffman House backs, and one that has a Buffo Grand-Poncico back, all have Flexo Giants backs. The attractive fronts are vg overall. Back damage that ranges from slight to significant and typically is moderate dictates an average set grade of f-g. The tri-fold card is technically g and presents very nicely.

Lot 272. 1923 E123 Series of 80 “Movie Actors and Actresses” Starter Set – 52 of 120. This issue features motion picture stars of the period. All of the backs specify a set of 80 cards. Highlights include #1 William S. Hart, 7 Will Rogers, 9 Jackie Coogan, 24 Rudolph Valentino, 47 Hoot Gibson, 78 Gloria Swanson and 119 Mary Astor. Twenty cards, or about 40 percent, are vg or vg-ex. Lot 273. 1923 E123 Series of 120 “Movie Actors and Actresses” Partial Set – 85 of 120. Stars of motion pictures, primarily silent films, are featured in this issue. The back of each card indicates that the set consists of 120 cards. Highlights include #2 Agnes Ayers, 7 Will Rogers, 20 Sessue Hayakawa, 61 Monte Blue and 107 Ben Turpin. About 35 have back damage, most of it minor to moderate, and 20 more have a small section of tape or tape residue that does not obscure the text. About a dozen have significant back damage. The fronts are predominantly vg and vg-ex with about 15 less than vg and seven ex. These cards are difficult to find. MB $100.

Lot 274. 2 1934 R56 “Funnies” and 3 1930s R48 “Film Funnies” Cards. The Funnies set, issued by General Gum of Chicago, consists of 24 unnumbered cards. In part, text on the back of one the cards reads “Aunt Mamie goes ‘SOCK’,” while the other begins with “Looks as though Perry just told his Dad.” Both cards are ex+. The Film Funnies cards were issued by Gum Inc. They are: #7 f-g, 14 g-vg and 20 f. First time we’ve offered cards from these sets.

Lot 275. 7 1935 Dixie Premiums + the Front and Back Covers! Outside of 19th century tobacco card albums, few issues are more attractive than the 1930s Dixie premiums. For 1935, Dixie produced a set of 29 premiums picturing the era’s top movie stars. These premiums measure 9” x 11”, have a yellow border at the left with two pre-punched holes and the star’s name, and career information on the back along with five b&w photos. The seven performers are: Jackie Cooper, technically g-vg because the “5” was erased from the yellow border; otherwise, vg to vg+. Myrna Loy, very nice premium, vg because of a couple of ¼” or smaller edge tears. Ken Maynard, vg+ to ex. Dick Powell, vg-ex with an ex appearance. William Powell, technically vg+ to ex because of a paper wrinkle; displays as nm. Ginger Rogers, f-g with a small tear around a pin hole outside the image area. Norma Shearer, punch holes reinforced on the back; otherwise, vg+ to ex. The covers for these premium sets are uncommon. This example, titled My Scrapbook of Movie Stars, has light stress creases along the punch-hole edge of both covers, as well as two tiny areas of paper loss. Their appearance is ex+. These premiums and front and back covers represent an excellent start on a 1935 set or a fine addition to a set already under way.

Lot 276. 1935 John Player & Sons Kings & Queens of England Set of 50. These cards are 2 7/16” x 3 1/8”, the scarcer and more valuable format. Kings and queens from William the First to Queen Mary are presented individually on these colorful cards, which have a brief biography on the back. Many images are from paintings in England’s National Portrait Gallery. Slightly more than half of the cards have very minor back damage, primarily affecting the “g” and “l” in “England.” The biographical information is unaffected and complete. The fronts are primarily ex-m to nm with a few less. MB $75.

Gorgeous lithography portraits include Pythagoras, Euclid, Hippocrates, Nobel, Archimedes, Bell, Diesel, Darwin, Pasteur, Galileo, Franklin, Morse, Carnegie, Edison, Cook, Peary, Amundsen, Stanley, Livingston, Zeppelin and Wilbur Wright.
