Lot 196. Two 1927 World Series Wire Photos Featuring Ruth, Gehrig. The 1927 New York Yankees are considered to be the greatest team in baseball history by many baseball historians. The all-star lineup known as “Murderer’s Row” outscored opponents by nearly 400 runs and hit .307 as a team. Babe Ruth set the original single-season mark with 60 home runs, which was more than any other A.L. team combined. Earle Coombs in center and Bob Meusel in left field hit .356 and .337 respectively. Lou Gehrig had his first big season, batting .373 with 47 homers and a league-leading 175 RBIs. The Yankees became the first team ever to sweep the National League in the World Series. The two sepia 10” x 8” wire photos are matted and framed to 15” x 12.” The first wire photo is described on the back: “Babe Ruth greeted by Lou Gehrig at home plate after one of the Babe’s home runs in the Pittsburgh World Series of 1927.” The second wire photo is stamped “International Newsreel Photo” on the back, which also has a filing label. The filing label says: “Third Game World Series. New York. Photo shows Coombs and Koening of Yankees scoring on Gehrig’s triple, and Gehrig rounding third. He was caught trying to stretch the triple. L-10-7 27.” Both framed pictures display as near mint. These two great photos capture a couple of great moments in baseball history.

Lot 197. 1940s-50s Anonymous Premium Photo of Satchel Paige with the Black Yankees. With Yankee Stadium as a backdrop, this photo shows Paige ready to deliver a pitch. He wears the pinstripes and cap of the New York Black Yankees, a team he played for only in 1943. Who distributed these 8” x 10” black & white photos is uncertain. This photo is a great addition to the checklist, which SCD has started in its 2007 Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards. The photo has some corner impressions from residing in an album, and a couple of minor creases. The appearance is excellent. Paige is seldom seen in a photo with the Black Yankees, and this is one of the earliest photos of the Hall of Fame pitcher.

Lot 201. Vintage 8” x 9 ¾” Josh Gibson Photo. This black and white photo is creased and exhibits staining in the border. There is a very small amount of inoffensive staining on the photo itself which does not affect Gibson’s image. The photo features Josh in a Homestead Grays uniform and cap with his bat. He is kneeling, waiting and watching intensely in the on deck circle. The image is profound and powerful, appropriately symbolic of Gibson’s remarkable hitting prowess. The text at the far left reads, “Photo by Ernest Withers of Memphis 46.” Gibson’s name and position are written in the lower right hand portion of the photo. A brief biography is typed onto the reverse. Gibson’s feats and accomplishments are legendary. He is perhaps the greatest power hitter the game has ever known. One of his contemporaries may have put it best: “Josh would hurt you” he said. “A ground ball in the infield, catch it, your hand feels broken, he would hurt you.”
